My position on images is that they must add to or reinforce the message. But keeping in mind that a picture tells 1000 words, images can add a great deal. Of course, you have to also understand that branding is much more than a logo.

The most important part of a branding effort is identifying your offerings, your values, and your ideal customers. For me, an effective brand connects these, and its tagline explains how. Accordingly, my first step is helping the client understand and describe the three key elements.
