I was fortunate to have had an experienced mentor guide me from 1991 to 1996.
He made a huge difference for me. The principles that he taught me are still sound.

This is oversimplified... The first thing is to look at what it really means to keep everyone on the same page. There are many answers. But one that is typical is a common future that would be compelling. I usually start with the leadership team creating this future - in what I call business...

This is oversimplified... The first thing is to look at what it really means to keep everyone on the same page. There are many answers. But one that is typical is a common future that would be compelling. I usually start with the leadership team creating this future - in what I call business Shakespeare - a language that captures the imagination, but at the same time sounds "doable". There are certain factors that make a compelling future (too complicated to cover here.) When you create that compelling future, the next steps are to 1. to mischievously (i.e. without being contrived and without force) have others find it compelling 2. create structures, systems and accountabilities to make that future real and with "concrete". The last stage number 2, includes policies, hiring policies, daily promises etc. that are aligned with the new future. This last stage is designed to disarm the cynics and to strengthen the reality of fulfillment. This means that the company will have to renew / strengthen their relationship to promises - i.e. taking promises seriously. This works for smaller businesses - up to 200 employees. Beyond that, is a whole different level of complexity.

I am very comfortable overall.. given that I host huge events online. But I like the spirit in which you ask this question. Because many people (and I meet lots) are afraid or have some deep block or concern that stops them or slows them down. On the surface it may be true that they want to be safe from Covid, and there could be something more deep seated. Of course, that excuse is eradicated with the availability of online meetings like zoom. But then there is the counter to that which is more like "it is just not the same as in person" which of course if circular reasoning. So if this is the case, more than likely there is an internal cause - a block if you may. That does not mean that you have to go out and start doing public speeches right away. But it may mean that there is a need to dig a little more deeply into the source of the issue. I say this with experience - I went through this block 30 years ago. I was lucky - I had a mentor who guided me with love, experience and the right amount of challenge. Pardon my ramblings, but my point here is to present an opportunity for those of you who are stopped to talk to friends or find a mentor who can help you get clear and confident about getting out and about - so you can freely grow your business with ease and profit.

What I bring is something that very few business mentors can bring - a combination of sufficient wisdom and experience to know how well to pull a business leader and when to pause and let them gather strength. Couple that with a future orientation - where they want to go and why - an unrelenting but gentle wave upon wave of deep reflection and market verification (data) to uncover her voice - so that it sings and compels undeniable attention to her services; to have her inspired to see the ease of having people chase her for what she provides. That uncovered ease transforms her mindset and attitude to enable the breaking of that "plateau" for what is possible and realistic. Then without pausing unnecessarily, I take them through the process of creating workflows, systems and structures that genuinely create free time - so critical to prevent burnout and to increase innovation. All of this requires a mentor who has been through the ringer - and danced with countless failures to countless successes; I want entrepreneurs to discover and uncover what is possible and then make it real without compromising on what they need to feel nourished, well and excited genuinely about their life - their entire life.

That is a good place to start. Then I start asking questions with their permission to find out more about what exactly they need based on the context.

I think I have a more nuanced and real solution to this quandary. I think the right question to ask is whether you are fully committed to getting the right marketing strategy? (period) The issue I see with most people is not so much cost, which I can see can be a barrier - it is more that they are not willing to spend the time and energy to get the marketing strategy to start with - one that will create traction with less money spent. Without a good and well designed strategy, your marketing budget will be a drop in the ocean - unheard. Having said that, there is usually a threshold budget for marketing for each type of business situation. e.g. A chiropractor in a highly populated urban area may have to really spend more in the order of $2k - $5k to $10k a month (without thinking) because there is more competition. A chiropractor in a smaller town with less competition, may need far less. A smarter chiropractor can have an outstandingly well thought through strategy that brings the cost down in both small and big towns to about $2k per month yielding a 10x return. This is not abstraction or theory - this is the world that I work in and teach in. The old adage "Work smarter not harder." is modified in this case "Think and design better not harder. Less Money, More smart design implies less cost and greater return on investment." I hope this makes sense.

Everyday. Reducing Your burn rate is the best way to wealth - most people over focus on income. I know many do not like hearing this :-) - so didn't I until I saw the results.

This happens from time to time even to the most experienced of us. I usually look to see if there is something missing for me - missing in terms of a broken promise to myself or others, a value or an experience that I want that is missing or not being complied with, an unresolved communication...

This happens from time to time even to the most experienced of us. I usually look to see if there is something missing for me - missing in terms of a broken promise to myself or others, a value or an experience that I want that is missing or not being complied with, an unresolved communication somewhere with someone (e.g. a broken promise or something that I am suppressed in stating). I also look to see if my health is compromised somewhere (e.g. not enough sleep, water, nutrition or exercise.) I check where my flow state is being interrupted (perhaps too much of a challenge or too low of one.) Sometimes, it is none of these. Then I let go of the need to fix it and start looking at someone ... a friend that I can talk with or joke with - just to unwind and let my mind unwind. There is also something to be said about prevention rather than a cure - I try to do all the above before the problem hits... and make sure that I enjoy the process and embrace it no matter what.
