Ask a lot of questions about them, their business and what they need. Be an exceptional listener, rather than talker, and you will certainly stand out in the crowd. I find by listening, I get an advantage as I learn a lot about their likes, dislikes and so forth, then, when I have a moment, I'll hand them a business card and say, "I'd love to help out wherever I can, and I'd love to tell you a little bit more about my business when time permits." They may look at the card and pocket it, or may begin asking questions right away. If it is pocketed, I'll ask, "Is there a good day or time within the next week or so that I can come by and learn more about your business and needs?" People often appreciate someone who isn't rushing them and willing to GIVE their time. Everyone has their own radio station, WIIFM (Whats In It For Me)...and if you seem too tuned into your radio station and not willing to hear theirs, they will walk away quickly. However, if you show compassion and a genuine interest in them and their cause, you may land a customer for life.
