Because I am an owner operator and don't have employees to pay, I don't charge extra for the holidays. This is my busy season, so I don't need to charge more, and I earn the loyalty and repeat business of my clients in part due to that.

I'm a sole owner/operator, but I have had people look after clients occasionally. The best resources for those people are other pet care professionals (veterinarians/techs, pet sitters, kennel workers, dog walkers, pet store employees, etc.) and rescue volunteers. The volunteers at local shelters and rescues are pretty much guaranteed to love animals, so it's a matter of experience and training from there. We also have an excellent veterinary college and vet tech program here, so students are great possibilities.
It may be even more effective to market to people who are close to retirement and starting to plan. Several of my clients who want to travel more when they retire and looking for options.

Referrals from trusted sources have been my number one source of business. Follow those up with friendly, DEPENDABLE service and you're halfway there. Ask your own veterinarian, favourite pet store, groomer etc. to refer you personally, and make sure they all have cards. Introduce yourself to area veterinary receptionists (the vets are too busy and don't answer the phones!) and make a good impression. Leave cards and holders for them wherever you go, with your card on the holder and a reminder to call you when they run out. Pet stores, especially smaller specialty or locally owned stores, are great sources of referrals too.
