BBB is not an adjudicator of CPAs or other tax professionals. The BBB is a paid member organization that has no control over whether the CPA is a scammer. If the accountant is a CPA, that is certified, he/she is more than likely affiliated with AICPA organization. Tax preparers may be Enrolled Agents (EAs) that are deemed qualified by the IRS. Tax preparers who are neither can be AFSP qualified and have passed an annual test. If so, their names are listed on the IRS.gov site. All have to have a PTIN, a number given by the IRS necessary for them to file taxes for clients electronically. We tax preparers all have to adhere to Circular 230, a code of ethics sponsored by the IRS.
We professional tax preparers use professional grade tax software. If you are using Turbo and one of those "free" programs you will have to call the software provider.
