The most important part of digital marketing is having a strategy. Any digital marketing activities could serve a purpose or could be a complete waste of time unless you know why you are doing them and what you want to get out of them.

Before you start any marketing you should be clear on a few things:

Which audiences (aka customers/segments)  you are trying to reach?

Value proposition - how will you provide value to your customer? What is unique about you, your product or service?

Messaging - work out key messages you want to deliver to the audience first

Once you have the above figured out, then work through which tactics you need at each stage of the Marketing Hourglass - website/email/advertising/seo/social/content/etc.  - to get your audience to Know => Like =>Try => Buy from you.

This is a great answer, and I agree with all of it. However, I asked the question with an ulterior motive in mind. Most answers that I received were geared towards that person's specialty or business. I received strategy answers from people that do strategy. I received visibility answers from those that focus on your online footprint. Some of the best answers were received from those that do not do marketing, which to me, represented what the consumer "feels" they need from marketing. Are they right? Sometimes. But it brings up an important and often disregarded point. We, as marketers, need to listen to the consumer. The other interesting thing that came out of this question was that most were, albeit subtly, selling their services. I am convinced that Alignable is here for us to sell our services. However, the sharp consumer will discern between those "selling" and those that are genuinely interested in their business, which all boils down to building a relationship.
