The answer is different for everyone. It takes More a personal touch to deal with residential work. Commercial work is more intense and time demanding. I personally have moved from residential to commercial to utility. I prefer Undergroud Utility work, I have place much time and a great deal of a investment in training, tools and equipment.

For everyone it’s different. I would suggest you start taking on some commercial work and studying the codes, even if it means taking some courses or partnering with a larger outfit. See if that takes your liking, you will need special tools, testers and equipment, but in the end it worth it. Your return on your investment will be very much greater and faster than in a residential application. 

Take a leap of fate and just remember, never get into something halfway, through your entire life into it.

Invest in study materials, join Electrical groups, go to trade shows, invest in comprehension of the NEC and NFPA rules and articles
