If I am going to invite a company into my home to provide any kind of service, I look for referrals. But, this may surprise some, I also check the phone book for a listing. The phone book often speaks to the solidity of the business. A professional looking website can be thrown up over night but a listing in the yearly phone directory speaks to the longevity of that business, at least over the course of twelve months. Even with the phone book, businesses come and go each year. Certainly in our field, hardwood floors, we see a constant churning of companies emerging and disappearing every year, but it is those we see year after year that grab the attention of potential clients. If you are to be welcomed into my home, I want to see that you've been successful in business over a sustained period of time. And I hear my clients tell me the same thing, they found us "in the phone book."

I think that it is imperative that homeowners understand the risks of hiring lowest-bidder contractors who circumvent sales tax and payroll taxes that actually protect not just the employee but the homeowner. There is little recourse for a homeowner when an injury occurs on the job performed by a non-compliant contractor. The homeowner could be on the hook for damages and work place injuries. The client should be wary of bids that come in much lower than other bids for the same work. Additionally, we are often asked by the potential client if we can perform our work "under the table" when we produce a bid. As a 27 year long company, we provide full benefits for our employees and have many fixed monthly expenses whether we are busy or not. It causes a bit of consternation when we are bidding against rogue competition who do not comply and therefore can underbid, not pay the true costs of running a business and collude with clients who encourage the practice.
