I hold family portraits in a very special heart-centric place. And this is the time of year when people start to be a bit sentimental and think about their ancestory. Since digital, people have stopped making prints and archival albums which are so important to a family's history. I help remind them that an archival book or collection of prints can be held next to one's heart, and shared on the couch with your beloveds. Those people we love are worth everything. Yes, fall is a great time to offer portraits, prints and albums.
My best promotion was the savvy, super cool studio manager I hired. Unfortunately, she was scooped up by an art museum in LA. But in the meantime, she and I made an excellent team, wow'd our desired audience, and made booking super easy.

Create a mini video headshot promotion where folks come in for a quick clip, same background for everyone, provide them with a short 10 second script form to fill out, and they pay a set amount, all back to back on one day, set it up so there's minimal or no editing. For crowdfunding, include...

For crowdfunding, include kids or a learning program somehow in your project so people can gain life skills, perhaps disabled folks. You need a hook or an emotive connection people can get behind.

I'm a very non-typical "sales person". Sales is not my thang. I'm straight ahead and helpful in my approach. I let my work and reputation speak for itself. At the end, I provide the information they need in order to book if they choose to. Sometimes they book on site but most of the time, they need to consult with others and call back later. I would say about 50% book that I meet with in person. I would prefer to pay someone else to do this for me but in my experience, it's usually most effective if it's me.
I would hire a professional SEO service/professional. It's key to customers finding your website, which translates into marketing dollars and incoming customers.

As for information from other photographers...I guess it depends on how your mind works. I'm a do-er, so if I get a tip, I do it to learn it.

1-3 times is the short answer. But it really depends on how photo savvy the inquirer is, and also, if they already have a mature or well formed aesthetic...it's much easier to discuss art and composition for instance. They get it and they get me.
