It’s pretty simple, manpower is at a premium, you have to pay well to get and keep techs. You also have to provide them with the right equipment. People complain about an alignment at $109.95. That Machine and rack cost over $60k.

My favourite is the check engine light, we charge an hour diagnostic time. You’re taking one of my most skilled and most expensive employees, and one of the most expensive pieces of equipment to tell you what is wrong with your car. Those things need to be paid for. I have in the past with a couple of belligerent customers asked them if they would go to work for nothing. The answer is always no. Quality coats. We offer service 3 ways, good, fast and cheap, you can have two of the 3. If you want it good and fast, it’s not going to be cheap, if you want it cheap and fast, it’s not gonna be good.

I’ve lived in both worlds and there are good and bad on either side of the fence. The biggest hurdle dealers face is parts price. The aftermarket can purchase premium OE equivalent or better parts at considerable less money, they have significantly less overhead, and the ones that train their techs are every bit as good as factory trained techs. It’s a tough battle as for some reason there is an inherent fear you’re going to get it up the hoop at the dealer
