From the time I turned 16, I loved the automobile. Entering the Air Force at 17, I auditioned for the Air Force Band (my other passion- music). Due to an accident, I was unable to play the trumpet and transferred to Special Services. My new roommate ran an auto body shop for servicemen to use to fix their vehicles. We worked on cars after hours to earn extra spending money. After my four year hitch I returned home and opened a shop two months later. We are in business 56 years and still in operation with my son at the helm. We added many additional services over the years like A/C service, full auto collision repair and painting, propane sales, RV & Marine store, fishing store, and storage for campers and boats. And Oh Yea- I played in a rock band for many years too. I would encourage Veterans to seek their passion to choose a career path forward. Don't be discouraged by your mistakes because they can make you stronger. God knows I went to the school of hard knocks.
Fortunately our auto-body business was deemed essential in Pa. Although our business slowed May-June, we had enough work, including building maintenance, to keep all our employees busy. Not back to our normal workflow, but a July hail storm was a "shot in the arm" for us.

The autobody shop is the main part of our business and slowed to the point we considered laying off a few workers, or at least cutting their hours. Thankfully as the state relaxed the lockdown, business has picked up. In my 56 years in business, I believe this pandemic is something that will have repercussions for a long time.
If you got the PPP money feel fortunate. We applied the day the application went live and never heard a thing. We also applied to the U S Chamber and they were courteous to reply they ran out of funds. You either have to be extremely lucky, have a hot shot lawyer, or know someone controlling the...

Fortunately the last week or so, our business has increased as things seem to loosen up. Your question should be directed to your accountant.

We are in the auto collision business 56 years. As long as there are autos on the road there will be accidents. When we started in business in 1964, There were 12 autobody shops within 13 miles. Now there are three. We tribute our success from great customer service and top quality work. We no longer sell boats but retain a Boating, Camping. and fishing store. Regular operating hours are imperative.

The old standbys still work for us. Radio, newspapers, sponsor local school, firefighter & rescue squad fund raiser events. Getting involved with community organizations. Social media too.

We give our customers pens and notepads with our business information for years. Recently we started to give our autobody customers a led flashlight that can go in a glovebox, purse, briefcase, or jacket pocket. Probably the most appreciated of all our promotional products.
