(more) How to win the Big Ones When my company was small, but growing, I was always looking for new ways to grow. We were starting military contracting but our core business was repairing cargo containers for the airlines. While talking to a competitor in Miami, the owner asked me “did I see that silly quote request from the Post Office for their container repairs?” He said it was a joke, no one would take the time to answer all that crap. I asked him to send it to me – I needed a good joke – but I really thought, this is just a government contract and I know how to read government contracts. It came to me - and I could see where it was a lot of work – just to read and understand it. I thought, how could the Post Office put out something this hard to grasp and a light went off and said “they are talking 'Post Office'”. I thought, I'll ask THEM for help. I requested their employee manual and I studied how to talk 'Post Office”. Then I submitted my company's quote. I was in the three companies group they were going to come and see and interview. We had no pretty office suites or conference rooms, but we could dress up what we did have. We requested the names of the Postal Executives who were coming to see us. I had a large Welcome Easel made with their names on it. I had a large map made showing the cities we would service and how we would move things. Everything said what we would do thinking 'Post Office”, not us. I asked my CPA and my bank VP to attend the meeting. We wowed them. They were planning to stay for three days – they left after three hours. I got a 9 year – 9 Million Dollar contract that was 'cost plus with guaranteed profits'. Why did I win? I was different than all the competitors: we knew how to talk 'Post Office'. I included my CPA and banker in the meeting. I took the time to know the clients coming and had a grand Welcome for them. Think long and hard about how to be different in a real way, so that the client knows you and you will make them a hero by hiring you to do their work. We went on doing the Wow-things for other major contracts. It is fun – give it a try!

When done right the child out runs the founder. Its a hoot to be of service in this bumpy ride.

Everything you own, is many times, just that, in a start up. Honesty, and hard work takes all the energy you have. Unless your willing to put it all on the line, work for someone else. The Ceos that I coach are half of one percent of the normal population. They act and think and execute differently than most people. But if you have what it takes — what a ride.  Go for it! Sam

Never‼️‼️‼️The good you do comes back to you as does the bad things you do. And it spreads quickly.
