My business essentially stopped. No calls, no work. The cure the government is imposing on us is worse then this flue. according to stats, the seasonal flue effects approx a billion people around the world, resulting in half a million deaths, then this flue must be viewed in the same context. Our prime minister will play the "Hero" and try to spend his way out of this then we will pay it all in high taes.
Speaking from a personal experience, Reviews are not a major factor in my business.

I find people will hire you not based on reviews but weather they have a "Good Feeling" about you as a professional. Maybe 1 customer in 5 will be interested in reviews about me or my business. This makes it not cost effective to belong to web sites that display reviews, since you have to pay to be on them. In some cases no matter how much you try to do your best for the customer, they still are not fully satisfied with your service. That might reflect on the reviews.
To generate more business I rely on more advertising, not reviews.

Kijiji allows You to be in touch with a prospective employee the same day, and they can start tomorrow. Since it is usually unskilled labour, I usually hire one or two more then I need because not all will show up in the morning.
Kijiji ads generate alot of response so it is possible to select from a large pool of potential candidate. Try an employee for a day or two to see how they work out. if they dont, there are alot more to choose from.
I find now a days, customers are smart and educated. In my construction business at least, hard sales tactics like in a car dealership will not work. People tend to trust age, experience, punctuality, attire and short articulate presentation, with a bit of hummer.

I find it best not to overstay your welcome, try to read the customer's body language and not to push with sales tactics. you may end getting carried away and promising more then you can deliver just to close the deal.
Customers will usually call when they are ready, then you have control over the situation, and up-sale the contract with extras.
Since I am in the construction business, my experience may not apply to everyone.

In my situation, I do not necessary look for experience. What I look for is willingness to work and learn. I prefer to start an employee at an entry level salary and progress with experience and knowledge. I find that new comers to the country are best suited for this. They tend to be much more motivated.
I therefore usually have a short conversation just to judge a person's eagerness and attitude.
Knowledge of English is not important in my business, since it does not require communication with anyone else but me. I find that I will get a much better suited candidate that way.
I find that if you ask alot of questions, you will get alot of answers which will turn out not true. People will usually tell you what you want to hear to get the job.
Referral relationships are sometimes tricky, especially in the construction business.
People automatically assure that you will give them the cheapest price and the best service and that sometimes is not in your interest.

People automatically assure that you will give them the cheapest price and the best service and that sometimes is not in your interest.
I prefer to do good work at a fair and common market price for my service. I usually tell all referrals to get a couple of written quotes before I quote on their project, that way I have a clearer picture of the best course of action.
I also find it useful to discuss as many details and limitations of the project as possible just to protect myself from unreasonable expectations.
When I started the business things were a bit different. I printed some flyers and sent them through the post office to an area which I chose to work in. Once things started rolling, It was Word of Mouth, and other methods.

I find that it is best to let the prospect call first and show some interest. In my experience it pays off to invest a bit more into advertising and wait for the calls. Thats how the big corporations do it.
