How We Got Started

While volunteering in my young son's co-op nursery school in Milton, and mothers were encouraged to come in and help. I started doing design work for flyers and then proceeded on learning how the web worked. I taught myself how to create a website, and developed a community website for the community by the community. It had a business and organizations search directory, kids' fun place, advertising, and lots of user-generated content (UGC) that made the site very community-oriented. I taught business owners the "importance of the web", it was in 1997.

Know what it is you want to measure, then determine a strategy to meet those goals within the timeframe you set. Know your target audience. Know where they eat, breathe, and sleep (in other words, understand what pain points they have, concerns, needs, and wants). Align your services to their needs. Optimize and write up each of those services on their own page, so you can drive relevant targeted traffic to those pages. Have a great call to action on the page. Content should be engaging, authoritative, and shareable. The obvious: branding consistency, ability to reply in a timely manner, mobile-ready, add value to your target audience.

Once that is established you could then know which local media assets you would use to draw in that audience. For an audience that is outside your local community, you will have a whole education piece introducing the community, whereas those within the community - you will have to remind them why shopping local is better. Once this exercise is completed, all the other - graphics, messaging, frequency etc. will fall into place.

I tend to take the time and present them with a quick video. I find that helps solve the issue and is more efficient. If it is complex, then I will suggest they book some time for some training. For some of my accounts, I use Zoho. I actually like it and it is quite affordable as it integrates a whole system that can be used for communications, contact management, calendar etc. I highly suggest it as an alternative to Gmail and yahoo.
