How We Got Started
I was asked by a friend to do the PR for the League of Women Voters in
Tucson. Following that she recommended me for a 1,000-member
organization which needed PR. From that base, other members of
organizations I belonged to asked me to do PR for them.

"As a Past President of AAUW Tucson and chair of committees for that organization, I frequently depended on Maxine Goodman’s advice and judgement in getting news stations, newspapers, and local newsletters to run news items about our Branch and its activities. Because of the networks that Maxine cultivated, our Branch received publicity about our events and profiles of speakers and recipients of AAUW Tucson scholarships. I was impressed by her skill in knowing which angle to take, in accurate and professional composition of articles, and excellent sense of timing in knowing when to submit them. I also found Maxine Goodman to be an excellent speaker and organizer of events. Because of these attributes, Maxine was named Woman of Distinction by AAUW Tucson."

I always bring a contract, which I have prominently in front of me. After we discuss the project or work, I ask the proposed client if what questions do theyhave. If none, I then ask them how they would like to proceed, how soon they would like to start.

30 seconds is a long time to hear a value speech. I'd cut mine to 20 seconds and practice, practice, practice highlighting only the most significant memorable points, paring the speech to essentials and making the speech memorable with a special tagline repeated twice.

I would say being polite about sales calls never hurts. When I made calls to Silicon Valley companies in San Jose as owner & founder of my 25,000-circulation weekly, I always introduced myself, asked how the person was and how their company was doing before pitching them (which was less than a minute to ask if they needed recruitment advertising for my newspaper.) Most were Fortune 500 companies. I dealt with their ad agencies and directly. I always ended the call by saying, "May I call you again next month?" Everyone always said, "Yes." I would call every month for my monthly rejection -- which turned out many times to be success. I was known in the valley to be the most polite ad. rep. because I never got mad!

When you see opportunities, but don't know how to expand them & other work you are doing isn't helping you. Marketing pinpoints what you are doing now and supports your efforts and expands that gap to increase business.
