So I always approach people in a friendly and casual way. Appearing non-threatening or aggressive avoids the specter of suspicion about my motives. A good salesperson will also put the prospective customer first winning them over by being an attentive listener, and basically keeping our comments to an absolute minimum. Making the conversation about them and being respectful of their precious time will always endear you to them thus allowing you to be accepted as one who truly is there to help. Diving into a sales spiel without first making a positive personal connection is a sure way to a quick death of your presentation. I am reminded of something I heard a youth pastor say many years ago, " People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care"!
