Having been involved in M&A over 12 years, here are some thoughts.  Consider advertising for a professional GM to run the business - lots of good GMs out there.  If they pass 'the test' consider making them a partner by issuing ISOs (Incentive Stock Options) that vest over 5 years, with clear growth goals (10%+ annual growth).  This would position you to exit the business, while still receiving annual dividends/salary... depends on how your business is structured.  Lastly, the basic valuation model is either based on top line revenue, or EBITA... depends on what type of business you're in.  Then apply a multiple (e.g. $10M annual revenue/2x multiple = $20M... minus expenses or $2M EBITA/8x multiple = $16M...)... the model depends on your business.  Hope this helps.

Provide some 'pro bona' services to 3-5 mortgage companies in the area. This would provide your target customers with a 'taste' of your offerings. I would offer the question differently - 'what's the secret to maintaining work-life choice?' The choice I'm referring to is the work-life ratio where we choose how much time we dedicate to work, and to life. For many years this was 90/10, which work was the dominate choice in my life. Now it's more 40/30/30 (work, academia, family... yes, made time to go back to school). Overtime this ratio changes with opportunities, family needs (e.g. parent care), or even personal goals or health. Work will never provide the 'work-life' balance we seek, we must make the choice how we apportion our time.

Recommend aggressive marketing, and factual based investment logic to educate your customers. PS. As a SB owner, you should also be thinking of ways to reinvest your corporate tax savings. I recently advised a CEO on such strategies... one of which was to 'reinvest' in employee wages by 3-5 percent...

Demonstrate some of the offerings that your 'best value' price provides over a lowest price... would you hire a brain surgeon at the lowest price? Hire for attitude, train for skills - Jack Welch. Reference checks are one element in verifying skills and abilities. The other would be to provide a 'situational question', which should exercise 3-4 skills/knowledge. In the end, we only know what we 'bought' until we open the package and try...
