"Richard Poirier's book "In Defense of Individuality" is a good read and delves into improving the understanding of how we all function as individuals within society. The broad topic allows for exploring many interesting points and provides plenty of opportunities to delve deeply into individual concepts. It is a refreshingly intellectual read, and those are becoming more challenging to find in this age."

I see a lot of great cities on the top 50 list, but there are also a lot of great cities missing as well! When looking at it from a country perspective, there's just one Canadian city - Congratulations, Calgary, AB! Chuck is correct - a lot can happen during these last five days. If your city isn't on the top 50 list, reach out to your fellow business owners and support each other. Never underestimate how far a simple conversation starter can go. Many big projects started out with "hello"!

Thank you, Chuck, for the updates. It's interesting to see how quickly things can change and to get a feel for where we all stand within the Alignable community. I'm also curious to know what the top US and Canadian lists look like. We could dive deeper and see the top lists based on state/province, industry, etc. The amount of data Alignable has would be an analyst's playground and present many different perspectives on business across North America. If there were a user interface for us to play around with to see the various data sets, I, for one, would enjoy exploring it. Hint, hint, wink, wink! ;o)

All of the Alignable competitions provide excellent networking opportunities. I have had many meaningful conversations with other business owners. We get to know each other, our businesses, and our industries. However, getting to know the people is where the magic truly happens. It's the little things that matter. When we see each other as people instead of companies, we connect on a level that cannot be matched otherwise. Everyone wants to portray themselves in a professional manner, which is proper. However, that doesn't mean we all must be stiff and corporate in our presentation. It's okay to be personable and also to discuss non-business topics. It allows both sides to see beyond the initial corporate facade and feel a connection to the person representing that company. That is the initial stepping stone to nurturing great business connections.

It's not just the votes that make a difference, but more importantly, it's the reviews that everyone writes. Getting a better understanding of what products and services we all provide, and what makes each of us stand out from the crowd is valuable. Take the time to engage in conversations and truly get to know the various businesses out there. I'm always open to conversations and have had a lot of great ones lately. Feel free to connect with me and let's get to know each other. One small action can lead to amazing opportunities!

Never lower your price. Never provide anything for free. When you do these things, you remove your value. There are many other options out there that you can use to negotiate if you must. For example, you can offer a different product or service which is more in line with the customer's budget. Alternatively, you can offer to add something in as a bonus. Adding value is always a better alternative to lowering your prices.
If you sell a more complex service, have the customer start out with a smaller part of the whole. This gives them the opportunity to try you out first, without feeling that they're risking too much. A similar method is to break a project down into stages if possible. This allows the project to be broken down into subcomponents. The customer only has to pay for each one individually, one after another. This reduces their risk exposure. It also gives you the opportunity to prove your worth. With each completed component, the customer realizes that you produce great results. It won't take long and they won't hesitate to jump in with both feet for larger projects.
If you feel very confident in the marketplace, outright suggest to the customer that they shop around at the competition. In fact, help them do so by informing them of the types of questions they should ask, what they should look for, and what traps they should be aware of. This level of confidence you display will come across very positively. The customer will also see you as someone who is truly looking out for their best interest. Their trust in you will rise quite a bit!

Always remember why you're selling. If it's simply to earn an income, then your interactions will not necessarily come across as genuine. However, if your true intention is to really help people, the entire conversation will take on a completely different atmosphere. Your passion will show as you learn more about that potential customer. Ask open-ended questions. Listen intently to their answers. Ask follow-up questions and find out where their passions lie.
Many shoppers like to browse in solitude, and they cringe when they see a salesperson approaching. As a salesperson, keep that in mind. Often it's best to begin the conversation very casually, without referencing at all to your products and services. You can compliment them on their clothing, ask them about the traffic or weather, and simply engage in very light small talk. It may sound silly, but depending on that person's personality, it can work wonders.
If it's obvious that the shopper is interested in a particular item, offer to take it out of the box for them. Many people are quite tactile. They get a lot of feedback in life simply through touch. Once they are holding the product in their hands, the thought of it belonging to them starts to become a more realistic possibility. If it's a clothing item, invite them to try it on in the change room. If it's furniture, have them try sitting on the chair. For a car, they should sit in the driver's seat. All of these simple interactions help them envision owning the product.
Create a visual for the shopper by describing how the product works, what accessories it comes with or works well with. Find out how and where they intend to use the product, then frame your conversation around that. It puts the vision together for them, of them using the product in their home, at work, or in any other potential situation. This process gets the customer from simply seeing the product, to understanding how it will make them feel to own it and use it in their own environments.
See the shopper as a friend who you truly want to help out. Be friendly, provide assistance, answer questions, and have fun!

You should share your knowledge to establish yourself as an expert in your field, however, don't just go broad, but be sure to go deep. For example, you'll probably hear a lot of people make the simple statement that SEO is so important. That's true, but not very helpful. Whether you're writing an article or blog, speaking to a group of people, or otherwise sharing your expertise, be sure to go into more detail. Also include some action items that people can get started with.
Using the SEO example, you could provide some stats which back up why SEO is important. You could break it down into multiple segments to get more detailed, such as explaining how Google Analytics ties in with SEO, or speak specifically on long-tail keywords. The focus is to go deep and provide your audience with a clearer understanding of the topic. You don't have to make your audience an expert, but simply provide a few good nuggets of information that they may not have known previously.
Another way to show your expertise is to provide some strategies as to what could work very well for your potential clients. You won't have to give away all your trade secrets. Even if you did, they will still want to pay you to ensure it's all done properly. Your potential clients want to focus on their own business. They are not interested in becoming an expert on yours!
