I think my biggest success as a small business owner has been the ability to take the dream and make it a reality. The success has been in making the choice to show up every day, do what I can, and make a better life for my family.  (more) I think my biggest success as a small business owner has been the ability to take the dream and make it a reality. On October 16, 2006, my son was born with Spina Bifida.  Already having 2 little girls, I had taken to sewing their clothing as a way to ease the strain on our already tight budget and to calm some of the worries that plagued me knowing we were about to have a baby with special needs.  At one of my appointments with Ethan’s Neurosurgeon, preparing me for what was coming, the doctor suggested I find something to do that makes me happy as a sanctuary in case things go awry.  Jump to 2 years and multiple surgeries later my son is thriving and my oldest girl is accepted as a Company Dance for a local studio. We certainly did not have the money to support this (I couldn't keep a job due to our boy always being in the hospital) so I apprenticed at the studio and learned how to make dancewear and garment bags for them. That turned into a small business making purses, dresses, and diaper bags until one day I went to a local thrift looking for a chair. I saw this really nice looking wingback chair and figured why not, I know how to sew, I bet I can upholster too. I took it home, tore it down, threw away everything I had torn down and went to the fabric store to buy this yellow gingham I’d been eye-balling. There wasn’t near enough fabric left on that bolt to cover this chair but I had no idea, bought it and proceeded to “reupholster” my chair. Needless to say, that was a complete and utter failure because I did not have the old pieces to use as templates and no idea about the other materials it took to fix this disaster I had created. We moved back to Idaho shortly after this fiasco but I left the chair behind. After we got settled in our new home I took a breath, went to a local shop down the street and got to talking about my foray into upholstering. The owner of the shop decided to take a chance on me and have me reupholster a chair. I had done some research by then, bought a book and had a clue as to what I was doing so I took the job and never looked back.  I opened up CaseyGirl Designs in 2010 unofficially, and officially in 2012, on my front porch in my 100-year-old home in Star, Idaho. We moved to Weiser, Idaho to be around family and to live a slower-paced life where I opened up a brick and mortar with a small gift shop in the front. (Another dream of mine.) Now, almost 10 years later, our boy is doing well and I have a thriving business in a community that I love and loves us.  I have enough work to keep me going...well, as long as they’ll have me! I guess you could I successfully created my haven.
