As someone who is considered "alternative", I am not a big fan of the term. Complimentary is a better term - there is a time and a place for acute care / hospitals and a time and a place for complimentary.
My training as a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Functional Medicine Practioner (Functional & Lifetyle Healthcare) has ingrained within it to look for the "root cause" of the issue, not just at the symptom(s). The mere fact that a cursory look at blood work (all within the normal range) gives the conclusion that the person is "good", when the person in front of you is telling you different should be a wake up call to the entire healthcare community.
No person is the same and no case is the same. There also is no one right approach - meaning it is not entirely toxicity, nutrition, mindset, etc. An approach combining many methods is necessary and allows the client to also take some responsability for where they are, where they want to be and how they get there. This is what we strive to provide at the Empowered Living Institute - a whole pathway to wellness.
All that being said, the complimentary and allopathic healthcare fields should not be a competition or territorial fight, but a collaberation for the best interests of the client.
