I was teaching art in Knoxville, Ia. A craft shop was selling out, so I purchased the framing equipment and eventually bought a small shop in West Des Moines..........

Interesting question. As they say beauty is in the eye.....I respond to technique, composition and the energy of the artist. Those three criteria depend on what the artist is trying to accomplish. If it is a classic still life, technique is the answer. Composition is critical to any good painting...

If it is a classic still life, technique is the answer. Composition is critical to any good painting and the energy is all about how the artist applies the pigment.
Of course price is a factor. If the painting is executed well, it will sell itself. Size matters in terms of client needs and what works for your gallery.

When I started (39 yrs ago), customers names became my mailing list. we would put out a 'news' letter citing new mouldings, framing options, and offer a discount. We would always get a 5-6% response.........50-60 people visiting us when 1000 letters were sent. For referrals, we will hand out round wooden discs with 'round to it' printed on one side and our logo on the other. Everyone has something to frame when they get a round to it! It's good for repeat business and usually the discs are passed to friends of our clients. These days, our clientele is established........corporate, household, and designers. Hope this helps.

Most people do not have an appreciation for originals.........With this digital age, images of originals are reproduces at a fraction of cost. Many designers push decorative pieces to "fit" a room without consideration to the lasting value of original works. This is a topic that may be discussed...
