How We Got Started

My grandfather, Alvin Neilly, left Pittsburgh Waterproofing and started Neilly Canvas in 1940. I have been in the business since 1976 when my father died at the age of 47, and I was 20. There have been many changes over the years, and we have tried to keep up with the changing environment in the trucking industry and ventured into the awning business in 2002 after the economic downturn from 9/11.

We're a small business that spends around $16,000/year in transportation/logistics.  We don't negotiate rates, we went with the 3PL that offered us the best value along with a discount program with UPS package.  We are a Worldwide customer. I don't care if we can save money buying on the web, because I know we're getting a quality product for a fair price with a great delivery time. Support local business to help keep the local community strong and vibrant, which is vital to its health.

Jeff, yes you can, as some customers have asked what the charge for a consultation is. My approach is to do it free and add in my time to the price quote, especially if I have to travel more than 1/2 hour one way to the appointment. This way the customer thinks they are getting a free consultation, and you're recovering your cost on the back end. The only bad part is if you don't end up getting the job, then you're out your time.
