Referrals are part of life and are very important to achieve what you want to do. The only complications is when things are not being discussed openly. You can let the person find out for themselves and decide if this is the best person for what you want to do. I had a bad experience with a referral from someone but that should not stop referrals from being given, just proceed with wisdom in every interaction with people that you do not know.
