Dear Abel & Sofi: Sending Out An S.O.S. For 70-Something Senior Seeking New Job
Posted by:
Dear Drowning,
As a small business owner, I get resumes from older folks that move to the area and want part time or full time work. One of the biggest issues I have had with the majority of them is that they want the salaries they commanded in "the city". Some of them want a salary that *I* make in my small town. I told one woman that I could pay her $15 an hour and she told me she couldn't accept less than $25 an hour. While her skills and prior work history may have warranted it, this locality does not.
So my advice is simple, make sure that you are not pricing yourself out of the market you are looking for. In addition, because you now have some physical limitations, be realistic concerning what you are in fact capable of doing. If the job requires a fair amount of "hustle" make sure you can hustle. My mom, who is 80, took a job that required a lot of walking and standing. She could do neither. The job loved her and would like her to come back, but she had to be honest and leave because she could not do the job.
I'm not saying this is you per se, just some observations.
Perhaps you can tell us what your skill set is and we can give you some ideas about what may match your skills.
Good luck.
