Dear On Pause: I admire your bravery at moving forward alone. I know it must be a lot to deal with. On learning the Mac and submitting artwork...yes you can do it! I suggest a couple of classes in basic Mac use then practice/play for a week or so then take another class. As far as...

I suggest a couple of classes in basic Mac use then practice/play for a week or so then take another class. As far as submitting to printers/publishers, I have done that using MS Word sent to a PDF so I know you can do it easily with a little training. Best of luck. Debi
Hey Steve, what a great question to toss out to the group! I see a lot of answers that are just everyday methods of conducting businesses...knowledge, following up on promises, returning calls...etc. To me these are standard business best practices but they lack the WOW factor. Here is one of...

Here is one of our's....we have many!
Prior to a client's arrival at a large vacation home rental we ask the ages/genders of the kids....we also ask for the name of each girl's "favorite Disney princess". Then we purchase princess dresses in the appropriate size (complete with crowns) and place these in each of the designated bedrooms. Since we label the rooms for the parents, we know in which bedroom each child will be residing.

I assume you had a bad experience with a CPA. As a former CFO I can tell you that most CPA's are honest and ethical folks. However, from my experience many wish to expand their tax practices (where most have their businesses) into business advisors and their business experience is very limited. Therefore, they either give incomplete or poor advice to their clients. Their expertise lies in taxes and accounting processes...they tend to be very good at both. Best to keep them within their areas of expertise and seek out a true Business Advisor with lots of real world experience.

Dear Daddy-Daughter:
Like most small companies, I have family members working with me. Being from a big corporate background, I just treat everyone as I would other professionals. I was the CFO and had IT folks working for me. I would expect my IT manager to answer my questions, too, but I would ask for an "in depth" meeting rather than just questioning him when it was inconvenient. In these meetings he would walk me through the technical side of things.
In small business I found this same approach worked well for us, but it was tough for my son to adapt to since he had not had big company experience. After a couple of seminars on how to do this (similar to a coach) I learned how to avoid his hot buttons without sacrificing my need to understand.
The MVV must be attainable and it should represent your business and be unique to you. Then, you should live that mission every day. For example one of the 4 points in our MVV is to treat everyone (customers and staff alike) fairly and with respect. We do this every day of our business...so...

In my positions quick decisions were a necessity. I would set a timetable (a day, or two) for each major decision when time was available, then gather all the information I could in that window, and make the best decision I could at the time. Over the years I learned not to second guess...

I would set a timetable (a day, or two) for each major decision when time was available, then gather all the information I could in that window, and make the best decision I could at the time. Over the years I learned not to second guess myself. Granted in a month new information learned may have changed my decision, but many times even a less-then-perfect decision is better than no decision. Butlers On Call

Dear Grieving:
Fortunately my only son lives. I cannot imagine the depth of your loss except as I saw it in my brother and his wife. 22 years ago they lost their oldest son, a police officer, when a criminal he was chasing turned and shot him in the head. It was the first loss in my immediate family...ever. My method of coping was to "work". The day after my nephews death I was asked to take over the planning of the funeral. While we are in a small town, my brother (retired military) knew this would turn into a large event. So he turned to me, an experienced event planner. I went to work and planned the equivalent of a State funeral where state and local politicians and 5500 police officers from around the US attended. I did nothing but work for the 4 days leading up to the funeral. It was spectacular by all accounts. But during those 4 days I did not have time to grieve. In many ways I regret not grieving with my family but knew it was what I was "meant" to do. It sounds like starting this "charity" is what you were meant to do.
Seek help so that on bad days, you can take time to spend it alone or grieving as needed. On good days, you can lead or assist in the charge. Interns are great but there are also many people willing to help so that you are not feeling so overwhelmed.
My heart goes out to you in following what you were meant to do, even if it is not always easy.

Just have to chime in....networking, socializing are all good things to do once someone is able to do these things. Take a speakers boot camp, the 4 days will change your life.
