Forgot to add, when we reopen May 12th our staff will wear masks but we have also printed signs for the entrance advising that we REQUIRE all who enter to wear masks. We have complimentary disposable ones for our customers.  We owe this to our staff. We are in this TOGETHER. Retail gift store closed by state order. PNC slow to respond. We were stocked and ready for Mother’s Day, graduations, wedding registries (postponed now). While our goods age well, we are not sure how we will manage for the balance of 2020! Zero govt. funding in sight.  (more) Retail gift store closed by state order. PNC slow to respond. Work on a computer where you can upload exhibits like payroll reports, driver license, etc. You need to be ready to enter data that may not be easily available. Our bookkeeper and accountant were enormously helpful in providing data required. Once prepared, this task will only take about 20 to 30 minutes.....You should receive a numerical receipt but thus far but thus far that is all that we have received.

Only time will tell if the SBA opportunity will be helpful.  The application process may require data that is hard to validate ...will we be looking at 2019 data or 2020 data?  The 3rd quarter is only just now closing...My guess is that we all need good accountants or an outstanding relationship... But let this be a lesson to us.  Be aware, be well informed, pay attention to the news, learn to listen to the experts in the field! Mulholland & Sachs at Eton is eager to re-open but we will wait to be given the all-clear signal. 2020 will be in our collective memory forever!

(more) As a small independent retailer I would first take a look at your product and ask yourself who is this for? Cost, taste, conventions of your climate and region of the country?  Then if you think there may be independent stores within 100 miles, take time and visit them. Take a look, ask yourself would my product fit in? Would it be a duplicate of other goods already on hand? Does it fit their price range? If you come up with some affirmative answers to your own inquiry then ask who is the owner, buyer, manager. Take photos of your product, send an email with photos asking for an appointment and indicate that you have already taken a look at the store where you are seeking an appointment. Independents are able to make their own decisions but they are usually busy and need appointments and then you bring your samples and ask their opinion....I often have to turn down good new ideas but if I like them and think the person making or selling them is up to the task, I will refer them to other stores that might be a better fit. You have to get your feet wet. The large corporate stores may pick you up if you start moving but the other side of that coin is that they need lots of production and the decision makers are at buying offices....The only reason I would suggest going to a market show is if you need to better understand what else is being offered and with what price and terms....That is usually way off for a new business person unless you have come up with a bonanza product and have deep pockets available to launch your business....Good Luck! PS my number one pet peeve is someone who tells me they have just what I need and they have never set foot in my store or center....Be Prepared to be successful...Do your homework.
