How open is the client to your style and suggestions? Generally, for a service, I estimate the number of hours something will take and allow a per-hour price that will give me 1.5 to 2 times what I need as income for a week of that work. Multiplying that amount times the number of hours the project will take in total, plus meeting times and any travel or supplies needed, gives me pricing that will allow profit. Products may have their own costs associated, and I usually charge 1.5 to 2 times that amount, plus shipping and taxes applicable. If the project is a large one, I ask for 1/3 payment in advance, 1/3 when about halfway through the work and the final amount on delivery.

Most businesses will need to survey their friends, current buyers and online contacts, to see what they actually pay attention to. Then you have an idea of where to make your presence noticed. While it often makes sense to appear consistently (with appearances at least a couple times a week) online in social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others, it may also be advantageous to purchase local cable, radio and newspaper advertising (if your town has these, great; otherwise, look to your nearest city). If your industry is for homeowners or other "local service" needs, be sure to appear in Angie's List or something similar, like neighborhood postings. And, when you "say" something on any medium, aim for arousing interest - or passion, if possible - in your first words and images. THEN deliver your business message.

Yes, because even if you have a friend who's dynamite taking shots with a phone, those photos are low resolution...no good for print and not that great online, either. The project involved print, video, web, advertising, fundraising and signage with translations to Mandarin for an energy-efficient building that eventually was transported to China for viewing in competition with similar homes. What a wonderful whirlwind!

Proactively. I start with an estimate and ask for 1/3 payment on agreement, 1/3 on first proof and 1/3 plus any extra for changes when finished. (more) Proactively. I start with an estimate and ask for 1/3 payment on agreement, 1/3 on first proof and 1/3 plus any extra for changes when finished.
