I've found that when I offer a sliding scale to a patient who is committed to ongoing psychotherapy, as opposed to brief therapy, my business (as well as the patient) benefits. However, if I reduce my fee and only see the patient a few times, this does not benefit me financially. Therefore, when a patient asks for a reduction in my fee, I first thoroughly explore with them their psychological problems and together we determine a treatment plan of a minimum of about 6 months.
