For probably 95% of casual photographers a high quality smart phone camera will likely suffice but for anyone serious about photography a good quality DSLR or Mirrorless camera is a must. The creative control will be much greater and for some situations like wildlife, sports or astrophotography a smartphone camera just won’t cut it. Don’t get caught up in megapixels as most of today’s cameras have more than enough unless you are planning on producing wall sized prints. In general, you should go for something that you will actually carry with you as “the best camera is the one you have with you”. Work on your technique as an expensive set-up can’t compensate for lack of ability.
