How We Got Started

I have over 30 years in the asset protection and security field, this time has been spent in the retail sector. After leaving Walmart I thought it would be good to offer small and medium size companies the ability to reduce loss and also have a more secure facility.

The challenge is do you get a return that you can see and feel that the spend is worth it.  In most cases the reward has not been a benefit in the cost of advertising.   Getting your name out and the products you offer are a major challenge, mailings, emails, and cold calls all sound good however getting the connection is hard to make with companies.

(more) During the time as a consultant I have never not hired another consultant to work for me.   While not a current issue I can see how it could occur where you have a client and need some expertise that you currently don't have, or you need someone to just work through a piece of a project you need to complete. One thing I have done is worked to keep my list of contacts fresh with individuals that have similar skill set and also those that work in other areas.  Meeting with them and learning about them and is it someone that I could work with on a project. This is more about relationship building before you actually hire them, I on a regular basis meet with for coffee or lunch with a core group of people that I feel would be a benefit. As with any arrangement you need to be prepared to provide a proper scope of the job you are wanting done, put in place timelines for completion. My view is looking at other consultants not as competitors but my support staff for my very small business.

(more) When looking at my career and the work that I have either completed or been a part of two things really have given me great pleasure and create a strong passion. First is that of developing and helping individuals grow in the job the currently have or obtaining the one they want.  Being apart of that persons career and life with professional advice and providing personal suggestions to help them find a way to be productive at work and also most importantly away from work. Second would have to be helping my customers discover ways to protect customers, employees, and their profits.  The ability to look at a problem and find solutions that help a customer but also not be so expensive that they can't afford put the suggestion in action. I use an online calendar is the biggest thing, it is CRM Time Management and it allows me to plan daily and also build goals and objectives along with daily tasks that I need to get done. Tried going back to a paper planner but like using my laptop and phone for notes while still carrying a journal for business meetings.  I see the phone as a distraction when talking with people and have had comments that the feel I am listening to them when taking notes in front of them not on a computer or phone. The other thing is a routine every morning is email and planning and follow up for the week. The time management tool is an online one from Franklin Covey and is what I used in the past to be successful. Brett

This is very interesting and I think while trying several things from letters, cold calls, emails, and trade shows.  The best thing I have found is networking with the companies and people that I may want to provide a service.  The issue is when you are in a specialty area your services are not... (more) This is very interesting and I think while trying several things from letters, cold calls, emails, and trade shows.  The best thing I have found is networking with the companies and people that I may want to provide a service.  The issue is when you are in a specialty area your services are not every day and they only need you when they need you so the constant need to be networking and letting people know you are around is critical.

My thought is that you will see many close and the ones that don't will have found a specialty that they provide.  Some items based on regulations probably will not be sold on line or an individual will want continue to purchase in a store.  This is a similar issue that small towns faced when... (more) My thought is that you will see many close and the ones that don't will have found a specialty that they provide.  Some items based on regulations probably will not be sold on line or an individual will want continue to purchase in a store.  This is a similar issue that small towns faced when Walmart came to town and many of the stores just didn't, wouldn't or couldn't think of a way to change themselves to complete.  Many came up with ways to change and became successful, the key to this is not wait until the last minute to start making the change but start working on it now and become a viable consumer destination.

Paul, While I use the more traditional manner of billing with an invoice and am normally paid by check.  My PayPal is set up and after reviewing other options went that way more so for me to pay invoices by credit card rather than by check.
