(more) I have had dogs as pets all my life (which are more years than I care to admit).  I have had small Lapdogs, large dogs and even a couple of the giant bread.  They are not “like family” to us, they “are family”.  I believe dogs can be a great asset in a work environment as long as certain conditions are met and there are some challenges.  First and foremost the environment needs to be pet friendly in which the dog has access to food, water, exercise, and bathroom duty.  It is certainly better for a dog to be at work if the alternative is home alone for 6 or 8 hours.  It also depends on the dogs personally.  Is it friendly to strangers? When I encounter a dog at a business for the first time, my first thought is, is this dog going to be friendly or is this dog going to think of me as an intruder.  Be sure your customers are comfortable being in the same environment as your dog. That said, there are several other considerations to keep in mind.  Are there situations that could be potentially dangerous such as chemicals or equipment like forklifts being used.  Could the dog get trapped in a room or a dangerous situation.  Also think about your business and keep it professional.  Your business can’t smell like a wet dog.  How much does the dog shed and could pet hair affect machinery or interfere with the quality of the product. I’m sure there are many other items that could be added to this list. Dogs are great and it can work in some situations.  Just make sure you keep it professional.  And always remember...the business is not there because you have a dog, the dog is there because you have a business.
