It really depends on what type of entity your LLC registered to be taxed as. Ask your tax attorney, or CPA, whether your entity can have "owner" payroll expenses deducted on your annual tax returns or not . Interesting point though. I have a LLC client that legally can not have "Member" payroll and payroll tax expenses deducted on their LLC tax return; however, we put these "Members" on payroll for the convenience of them paying their income taxes (really estimated taxes). They are not able to claim these "Member" payroll and payroll tax expenses (company portion of taxes paid) on their annual LLC tax returns. Throughout the year, when I prepare their payroll each payroll period, I code these expenses to "Member Expenses" on their Income Statement "per books" (other Income / Expense accounts) that will end up flowing through the members' individual tax returns each year. We simply do a book to tax entry each year when they file their LLC tax return (known as a book to tax difference). Your tax attorney, or CPA, can help you with this possible option.

Thank you for providing this information. I provide Payroll and Human Resource Services to clients so I have been updated on this since the original date of July 2019. I wish the state would provide more guidance on the types of Contractors that are hired by Companies because there is still confusion relating to this to this day 09/28/19! Also, Payroll companies should by now have updated their payroll software and reached out to their clients. If Employers still have questions, they should reach out to them. One more thing that you did not mention. There is a PFML poster that is required to be displayed in an area that employees and contractors have easy access to.

The worse books that I have had to clean up are books that included: 1) Double Entry Bookkeeping (Related Party Transactions) - Especially one Company that was building a $25 million luxury housing project which included 15 units. 2) Inhouse Payroll including quarterly payroll tax reports. 3) Bookkeepers that had no knowledge of the existence of the Balance Sheet and Income Statement. 4) Books that have not been reconciled to annual tax returns. It happened because the bookkeepers were inexperienced. I found out because the bookkeepers quit without notice so I was hired by the owners to review the books. That turned into an engagement to clean up their books. Most of my bookkeeping and accounting engagements, since I became a self employed accountant / bookkeeper in 2001, have been to clean up the bookkeeping records of companies that hired inexperienced bookkeepers.
I charge hourly if I travel to the client's office and fixed monthly for work I do in my office.

Hire a bookkeeper that understands general ledger accounting; not just one that knows how to use software packages like QuickBooks. At year end, you may find yourself paying high clean up fees to your CPA or to accounting professionals like me. :)

90% of my business, as an self employed bookkeeper / accountant since 2001, has been correcting the books done previously by non experts. Many businesses will hire bookkeepers based on their rates but then end up paying someone like me to compile a complete and accurate Balance Sheet and Income Statement. Unfortunately, bookkeepers take a QuickBooks' class and then get hired as bookkeepers; accountants, office managers, etc. I always suggest that Businesses have their CPA's interview potential hires as well as discuss the going rates for experts. They will save money in the long run.
