About Us

B.Vocal LLC provides Presence Coaching, including Elocution (Voice & Speech) to help executives, established and emerging leaders, professional speakers, teachers, coaches and change agents to speak well, clearly and with confidence, and to connect with & positively influence any audience, whether in-person or via any audio/visual medium (phone, microphone, camera). Personal change for professional success. Elocution Coaching can also address American Pronunciations for ESL/EFL speakers who wish to modify accent to be better understood.

How We Got Started

I'm a lifelong theatre professional (actor, director, educator) with a specialization in elocution techniques. I began B. Vocal in response to those who kept asking, "Can you help me...?" ...be heard, be understood, connect better, feel confident when speaking, make a better/professional impression... etc. Turns out, I can, and have done so successfully since 1999.

Join a co-working group! Did wonders for me. Also, create your own supportive colleagues group and meet/lunch regularly. Give each person a time for explaining what they want help with and then an amount of time for group members to respond to just that individual's issue. (more) Join a co-working group! The very word "goals" shuts me down -- too much like "should," which makes my Inner Rebel "Run away, run away," like the Monty Python movie. I'm a solo business, so I start with what I want -- in my work and my life. All choices support those wants. I come up with a mission or aspiration (not a goal -- semantics are tricky). This year it's "Work fewer hours; make more money." How I do that has to align with my life, spirit, relationship, and creative work wants and values, which include what I want to provide my clients. I find the Hows by asking Can. What can I already do to further my aspiration? What can I learn? What can I change? What next steps can I take? Working with Can keeps my Inner Rebel engaged and motivated. Staying on track? I partner with a colleague and we use our best, wisest selves to encourage and guide each other. Want and Can is my own system.

The key: "Be more interested than interesting." Instead of focusing on yourself and what you should say and do (being self-centered makes us more nervous), be interested in others. I make every effort to attend the annual conference for my profession, VASTA (Voice & Speech Trainers Assoc., international). Hobnobbing and problem solving, tips sharing with my colleagues is always so validating and inspiring. The best aspect is active, in-depth workshops taught by masters in our field, for real skill-building. I go back to my coaching practice and my (college) classroom with new tools, new ideas, and re-ignited passion every year. I think the key is to research the groups/conferences for your profession and become active in one outside of the conferences, forming community. VASTA has very active Facebook and committee sites. Choose conferences that really deliver quality, immersive workshops, not just ego-driven solo presentations.

Everyone has different needs for motivation. My go-to book for the past year has been and still is Martha Beck's Finding Your Way in a Wild New World. Whenever you lose focus or energy, that little slump or gap moment (usually about every 45 minutes to an hour), get up, stretch, take a bio break, look out the window, relax your mind -- that means no media or smartphone checking. When you return and check your lists, you'll be able to identify the next priority and refocus quickly. Since I'm a Voice & Speech Coach, I also recommend humming or talking aloud on those little breaks. ;)

I point out a few of the key benefits of my service that most competitors don't have, like a customized, non-cookie-cutter approach to crafting my services to meet the specific needs of each client.
