How We Got Started

I had a terrible time finding pet sitters for my two old lady cats when I needed to go out of the country. The Day of Decision was when I returned from that trip, and found that one of my two cat sitters hadn't bothered to show up. My oldest, smallest cat lost a whole pound in 10 days. Too, I was 60-ish and was having trouble finding a good part-time job. So I started For Paws Pet Sitting to give others who love their furry companions an option for in-home care when they have to be away.

Years ago, she rescued a nest of baby rabbits and kept them safe in her bathtub. And that's when the idea for a wild animal hospital was born. Fellow Mortals has helped thousands of wild animals maimed by cars, power lines, and shooting. Yvonne has reached out to the best veterinarians in the SE Wisconsin area, enlisting their expertise to assist animals like finches, beavers, deer, great horned owls, and most creatures in between. The staff Yvonne has gathered is excellent. Wisconsin's indigenous creatures benefit from having Fellow Mortals Wildlife Hospital and Yvonne Wallace Blane in this area. "

What fun, and this may save time and disappointments during a first date because the groundwork about loving dogs has already been laid. In the interest of equal time for cats, I hope Sheryl also has room in her business for a few cat lovers!"

(more) I'm a senior woman with three rotating part-time businesses: For Paws Pet Sitting, Cobweb Creations by Janet (designing and knitting accessories), and I'm a published author and editor. I enjoy creativity and variety, period. All three of these businesses make me happy because each challenges a different aspect of my creativity, and they're all different. Too, when one business isn't doing so well, I can turn to another. And when all three are demanding attention, it gets wild! I never get bored, and I'm consistently happy with most of my creations. If a knitted piece doesn't please me, I rip it out and start over. I also get along really well with my boss--me! I am tremendously happier than when I worked a 9 to 5 job in a building I was forced to travel to, and coordinating my businesses from home (except for art fairs) makes working even better.

The top hurdle to my business success is finding the time I require to fit everyone in. Most people like their dogs walked at around the same times. I find myself juggling schedules. But I'm not complaining: any work is better than none. I'm also working on getting Cobweb Creations by Janet... We've gone through the first pandemic shutdown, and are inching back to normalcy. But can anything be "normal" again? Not only that, here comes the Delta variant, and most people are ignoring its horrendous possibilities. (more) We've gone through the first pandemic shutdown, and are inching back to normalcy. This is horrible! I had no idea this was happening. Just another way to squelch freelancers and tiny businesses, also kill places like Etsy. (more) This is horrible! I had no idea this was happening. Just another way to squelch freelancers and tiny businesses, also kill places like Etsy.

I am using the same advertising I've always used:  my business cards in local veterinary clinics, and word of mouth. I do not intend to change, pandemic or no pandemic. Recommendations from current clients are the most fantastic advertising I can have. One of the cast had to be replaced: Andre the Giant passed away several months before this happened. His lack reminded me of how important his gravel voice and gentle demeanor belied his great size, both in the movie and throughout his life. I enjoyed the reading immensely, particularly since Mandy Patinkin was playing his part of the Spanish swordsman 'way over the top.

No, I'm not better prepared for another lockdown. My money stashes are depleted. I'm hoping that my other jobs (I'm also an author, editor, and proofreader, and a professional knitter/designer) can help make some money.   (more) No, I'm not better prepared for another lockdown.
