They are exploring their options by getting quotes to see if coverage is affordable.

My typical response is, "I provide individual health coverage which is an affordable alternative to the Health Care Market place. We offer comprehensive plans not a short term plan.I am happy to provide a free quote to see if our plan is a good alternative." Then I stop....if they are interested it will start a discussion, ask for a business card or lead to a quote...If not, they will usually nod and I ask them about themselves.

If you offer coffee and donuts plus a flyer or business card to a contractor they are at least likely to stop. You are technically not selling a product just offering a service(individual health insurance).  If they choose to give you their card or contact info they give you their consent to be contacted.

If you have pre-qualified your prospect before the appointment, you can set an expectation of what you have to offer. Also ask questions and listen carefully to the prospects needs and wants, addressing those during the sales presentation creates "small closes" during the process.  If you gather information and your product addresses the prospects concerns, the deal should close itself.  If you sense resistance, go back to questioning and information gathering. Stay away from "closing lines". Clients want a real person,,,not someone who has memorized a sales pitch.

Be slow to judge.  Look at their interactions over a period of time-do they follow through in a timely manner, are they sincere?  Relationships are built over time.
