Volunteered in groups, got to know people, moved up the food chain in civic responsibility and now people refer friends to me. I also got to know my competitors and sent them business I couldn't handle- learn you can't do everything....Last Friday night, my wife and I were at the same table and everyone at the table was a client, and we they were asking me questions and then I lectured one doctor bragging about his new boat- he forgot to call me to get it covered. Takes time to get there and a lot of hours away from home, but it paid off.

Become involved in the community in a Chamber or another group- where there are professionals. Partner with the financial advisors mentioned, business owners who can't afford group coverage, church- put an ad in the bulletin---with your picture. Make cold calls to businesses simply leaving info...

Become involved in the community in a Chamber or another group- where there are professionals. Partner with the financial advisors mentioned, business owners who can't afford group coverage, church- put an ad in the bulletin---with your picture. Make cold calls to businesses simply leaving info with the receptionist to pass on to the person responsible for the insurance. The receptionists are the gate keepers and if you are nice and professional, they can be a great help. I would suggest as you mix and mingle in a mixer, when asked what you do, answer, present your card and respond "if you can help them or a friend have them call me", then ask what they do. I was referred by many because I wasn't pushy and you will find they really want totalk about themselves and you can learn a great deal.

We have a bold listing in the community yellow pages and we have monthly ads in a magazine that circulates to cities in our Best Southwest area- 12 cities around Cedar Hill in Texas, that tends to get us more calls; BUT occasionally the yellow pages ad has paid off. The unfortunate item is the loss of our individual business drew more than the senior market, but we concentrate on senior and group coverage as they have grown, replacing the individual business. We get calls from the magazine from the seniors, but very few on the individual coverage.

Once I understood what several were interested in, I could approach businesses I knew from my previous industry. Then I was able to answer questions from my friends on their needs. Some didnt need any help, but they referred me to family and friends. It all fell into place.
In insurance we deal with the same problem. A lot of people are in a hurry, so they do dialing for agents until someone can give them the price and time frame they want. Continue to return the calls, and ask them to keep you in mind next time. You will starve sitting by the phone waiting on...

I am involved in activities with a lot of people and get business from them and referrals; take the calls, and work with them if you can.

If I think someone is looking, I will see if they are interested in working with me if I see them. Was in a board meeting and asked a member how their husband was doing. Her facial expression showed me "Not well" meaning he wasn't getting support. He is capable- handles real estate in his sleep- decided to add insurance- just needs a little guidance.
