Our business was listed as essential, (its always been essential for my emplyees and myself). Since we are an in home service company adjustments were made in the spring shutdown. We added mask, social distancing, hand sanatizers, and disposable gloves. Shoe covers were aready a standard part of our service call, now all of these are the standard and will be for the forseable future. We also added portable handheld uv sanitizing wands to sanatize any surfaces we touch while in the home.

One of our local banks, Anderson Brothers Bank contacted me on April 1 to let us know that they would be processing applications on April 3. Then sent me over paper work to be completed on April 2, I completed all paper work an added necessary documents and emailed back the same day. Process was done on April 3 by the bank and we received our PPP funding on April 9. I think a lot of the problems associated with this program may be a banks either not seeing the urgency or just did not focus on customer needs. We are not a large company 15 employees, and this bank actually does not handle our business account or loans. My regular local bank didn’t even call to talk with us about the PPP program.

Most of this work is bid through the general contractor. You will need to contact them to get on their bid list. Most have contractor qualification forms on their websites so take note of who the GC is on the jobs you see and search or make a call to get on future bids. Another way is to sign up...

Most have contractor qualification forms on their websites so take note of who the GC is on the jobs you see and search or make a call to get on future bids. Another way is to sign up on one or more of several plan providers, or construction reporting sights such as AGC, Dodge report, etc. It will take a little while but you will get you info in the correct places

First they are not paying well when they don't pay on or before scheduled pay date. Have a discussion with these customers about why it's important to get payment in a timely manner. (IE: Keeping cost under control, cash flow, keeping your prices to them as competitive as possible) Studies have shown that if you do not collect within 30 days of work being completed then you are beginning to lose money, at 90 days all profit has been depleted from the job. Provide all you customers that are billable a clearly written payment policy, to include when payment is due (7, 15,30 days whatever you require) list any late payment penalties to be charged after that date. It's important for you not to deviate from those expectations since once you deviate you have told them that your expectation of payment is not really company policy. Treat all billable customers the same. I would suggest that you move all customers possible to COD, make credit card payments, bank draft payments, and financing available.

We receive and/or give two types of referrals. 1. Business to Business: I have been very careful to refer other businesses to our customer base. So many don't share a similar customer service view as we do. What I have found is that if we refer another industry to our customer base, the customer has an expectation of the the same level of customer service that they are accustomed to from us. 2. Customer referrals: This type of referral is the lifeblood of all businesses if you are going to prosper and be consistently profitable. These referrals begin long before any billable work is completed. CSR's set the standard when they pick up the phone, electronic communication after the appointment is set, arrival at the set time for appointment, complete any work agreed upon in a timely and neat manner. Make sure customer is completely satisfied with all work performed, then ASK for a referral. Asking is where most business fail with referrals. We do mail customers that give referrals a gift for that referral. IE: restaurant gift cards, movie gift cards, or discount coupons for future purchases from our business. We let the customer choose, and most of the time they chose the discount coupon for future purchases from us.

We have chosen to use a local outside vendor our website. I chose local because I like the fact that they can spend time with us in our office where they can learn more about what we do and tailor the site to our business. We could have generated a site in house, but for me I felt my time was better used on other projects. By doing business local we have been able to work a program with our vendor to manage or online presence(Blogs, SEO, SEM, maintaining relevance) at a far better price than working with several vendors for each item.

As a mechanical contractor in the Southeast US winters are normally mild, (average day temp 50-60F, nights 30-40F). Dec-Jan is our slower months for replacement business due to holidays, service is normally busy year round but not normally overwhelming, demand calls for service increase sharply when temps drop below 30F or above 95F. Service agreements offset the milder temps in spring and fall when the service department is at its slowest point. Replacement business is steady year round for us.
