I believe it depends on the type of business, but feel that in any business both are important. For me networking groups give me a much better ROI than advertising. I'm still rather new to my craft and the few ads I have bought have not returned anything like networking has. I've learned a lot in relation to FB groups and connecting with like-minded people there. It's a great place to help others and others are willing to help you. You build great relationships and in turn you can get some very valuable referrals.
Listen and most important ask the specific questions you need to get them to open up so you can learn exactly the best way to serve them. Take notes when talking to your clients to help you remember key points about them. And always follow up and check in to see how they are doing.
