Between employees and independent contractors, there are certain tests to be applied to determine whether a person is an employee or contractor. The main tests are:
- how much level of control a person has
- whether a person is using its own tools and equipment
- ability to hire new people as assistance
- what degree of financial risk a person is taking while performing a job
- who takes the business decisions such as investment opportunities, contracts, etc.
These are the indicators that determines a worker may be an employee or self employed individual. I hope this will help you. BTW, this is a Canadian way to determine that may be different than US but basics will be the same, I guess.

All maintenance related expenses are operational and infrastructural related expenses are capital in nature. In nutshell, any expenses which will give you a benefit for number of years, we count them as capital expenses. Any other expenses will be operational.

QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, MYOB, Peachtree etc., they are all effectively good and our clients are happy with them. We normally suggest our clients to use QuickBooks Desktop due to its available reporting options and user friendly interface.
