Yes, Google is my main source of conversions for many different niches. Google AdWords and SEO if your client is already looking for your product. If not, then you will have to do interruptive advertising and bring them into a funnel.

As a 10 year SEO veteran I would say no. This is because most of the time it will not be done to the high standards it should be and is just an upsell gimmick. Sadly, most people don't even know they are wrong, they just don't understand the full depth of SEO.

In a perfect world, I believe any SEO campaign should start like this/ depending on budget of course.
The SEO should take the time to really understand your business goals and the services your business offers.
Have a target you wish to reach for. For example if you own a female clothing store, you may wish to become as successful as Victoria Secret (I choose them because they have amazing marketing).
The SEO consultant should take the time to reverse engineer the website, cms, do a complete audit on it. Why do this? Your not looking to re-invent the wheel. Large corporations have already taken the time and spent millions on optimizing their marketing. They already rank for hundreds of thousand keywords, have used split testing on all of their pages to lower drop offs (bounce rate) etc. Whatever they are doing is working.
Create a website plan with sitemap, silo, ensure every page will have a purpose, call to action and actually need it's the user. Now plan your keyword research according to the each page/category. Take the time to understand competitors for those keywords while planning out your pages, then check page authority to see how many links you will need to rank the page. This will be used to determine the monthly SEO proposal in future and can be passed along to the social media team to post relevant blog content that can innerlink back to these pages.
Take the time to audit analytics, Seo tools, to see where the wins are on the old website. Some pages, urls, may be getting a lot of traffic and you don't want to throw that away. Make a plan to incorporate this into the new site. Sadly too many website design companies throw away quick SEO wins without realizing it.
Get all the content prepared by professional SEO writers (not all writers can write for search engines). Content for SEO has came along way in the last few years and you simpym can't stuff keywords in wherever you feel like it. When a user searches the web, they have a query. Your website should answer that query and if Google determines over time, it doesn't, well you lose rankings. This upholds the integrity of search engines.
With a plan in place, the designers should be able to step in and do their design work - then pass it off to developers once approved.
After the website is complete, SEO should be working one on one with developers to get the site optimized according to Google guidelines. If you are spending a lot of money on a site, website should pass Google Page Insight tests, score high in GT Metrix and tools.pingdom.com. Just because a website looks pretty doesn't mean it's attractive to a search engine. Remember, search engines don't see visually, they use computers to crawl and examine code and markup. Scheme and Amp technology should be implemented within the site in 2018. If not, shop around for someone who does it because search engines demand this.
Now the site should be fully optimized for on-site only. This is where you will begin to work on off-site with a SEO and you will pay monthly for this service.
My reasons for not working with a web design company for doing SEO? Most of the SEO service are outsourced by Marketing companies that are “good at everything". It's crucial to be able to track every step of the work that was completed incase you have to remove it in the future as Google updates its algorithms.
In order to get quality SEO, you should be spending at least $1000 per month depending on your niche. This is because SEO costs money. Most tools professional SEO's use are very expensive but they are important to get the job done properly. Can you take shortcuts and save money? Yes, you can. This often leaves yourself open to penalty, bad links building techniques and SEO that is not long term.
You don't want to be running a successful business then one day all your traffic drops because you have got hit with a Google penalty for bad link building techniques. Ask yourself, how much will that cost my business on the end. You would also have to pay a professional money to clean that mess up and that would end up being more expensive than it would have been to do it right the first time.
Please remember, SEO is an amazing marketing tool, only when it is done correctly. Users are searching for your service or product so it is the warmest source of traffic you can send to your business. A professional SEO will be able to determine if SEO is right for you (by determining if you can get an ROI from it).
Don't take my word for it, here is a video from Google that discusses, how to hire an SEO.
Please keep in mind that you can have quick wins with other search engines.

This all depends on your service and target audience. Personally, I'd choose networking groups if your budget is low. If you have a budget, then I'd choose SEO or adwords and let the clients come to you. From there you can choose who you wish to work with to make sure you’rea good fit together.

Hi Melissa, use syndication tools as Jeffery suggested or IFTTT. I would also review your analytics to ensure what you're doing is actually effective. I see many people overdoing it without results. Set analytic goals (bringing traffic and conversiosn), find what is working and scale that.

Best bang for your buck for conversions is SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and Pay Per Click Advertising in most niches. Why is this? The audience is already warmed up because they are searching for your product or service. Sadly, the marketing industry has became overwhelmed with SEO services but very few can deliver top 3 search results in search engines (while following long lasting search engine terms and agreements). Your goal should be to get in the top 3 for a variety of keywords and combine that with re-targeting via PPC/Social Media. Using this in conjunction with analytical data, you can really pinpoint where all your converting online traffic is coming from and scale it out from there.
