If you are an author, what is the best advice you can give someone who is just writing their very first book in terms of marketing it?

I am not an author but I did want to throw some suggestions out there. Utilize social media - post regularly & engage with others, consider doing podcast appearances, offer virtual & in person readings or trainings if your book is technical. Offer a freebie item to draw people into your website!           Best of luck to you - and congrats!                                               -Sarah, Virtual Desk

Best advice I can give is start the marketing the day you start writing the book.

My first suggestion is to join a critique group for the gene you are writing. Pick the brains of the advanced and published members.  Also, join writing groups on Facebook and Linkedin.  Ask questions, and help others when you can. Get known in online writing circles.  You can learn a lot and avoid big mistakes this way.

Learn how to create decent posts!  And then be consistent in posting about your book.  Do something to get people interested in reading it.  But try not to use the same promo too often in the same place.  Have a variety of posts that you can use and use them daily across all of the different social media networks.

When it comes to YOUR story, there is no right or wrong way...just do it...write your story. Someone is waiting to hear your story to change their life.

Market before and while you are writing it.  Work on the content a little every day.   You can self--publish on Amazon but I would suggest that you purchase your own ISBN number.

I have been helping a friend market his first book.  I'd be happy to put you in touch with him.  I built his website, set up a blog (he isn't really using - YET,) and adding an event calendar to his site for book signing events.  He has been in the top 10 books in the State for several months.  We have done Google display ads before several book signings with very good results  (21K impressions and 106 clicks to his website for less than $200 - AND someone recognized him at a convenience store from his ads.  He is closing in on his initial - that would be wonderful - sales goal.  dalebeasley.com  "What I learned at the 'Zoo"
