What are the best times for attorneys to receive CLE training?

In my experience, there is no best time of the day or day of the week for a busy attorney.  Attorneys' make time when they see a CLE class that interests them or appears to provide them with much needed knowledge on specialty areas from February to October.  At the end of the year, Attorneys take classes to fulfill the requirements and they are forced to do so to keep their license.

I prefer a Friday so I can "slide" into the weekend afterward. Mid week is very difficult. I don't really like local live CLE that starts at 8 a.m. because local live usually means a 1 hour commute beforehand. For the same reason, I do not like live presentations that are only 1 or 2 hours. Live presentations should be at least 3 hours to make them worthwhile. I appreciate video CLE at the lunch hour or first thing in the morning. I also would like CLE during the winter break schedule, which not one bar association or private CLE provider seems to have. I would use that time to visit family in other parts of the country or vacation and take the day or two and get my credits. It's quieter for me during that time so it would be a perfect time to take CLE. I'm licensed in 4 states, all with varying requirements for when my reporting year ends, what needs to be live, what can be on-demand, what can be self-study (only 1 state has self-study), and so forth. I look for CLE that I can use in all 4 states for at least partial credit. 

Attorneys are required to met their CLE requirements once a year (12 month period) before the end of their birth month for the new year.  I have ben practicing for 30 years.  There is not really a best time for me.  The decision to meet your CLE requirements is driven more by the topic you want training in and the month and date that such topics are offered.

James: To the best of my knowledge, CLE credits are not required in Massachusetts. Which is not to say that we shouldn't upgrade our knowledge in important areas of practice. I have generally found that Monday through Wednesday (and sometimes through Thursday) are booked early in advance, and therefore I have usually scheduled CLE courses on a Friday in the afternoon if the course schedule allows that day and time.

There is never a good time for an attorney who is busy, either in a firm or as a sole practitioner. However, Friday always seems to be better than any other day of the week. 

I like lunchtime for short (1-2 hours) CLEs. Longer presentations are best, for me, in the late afternoon since I am an early riser.
