Please help us understand the fixation on this whole "Coaching" thing. It's perplexing to say the least. We learned everything we needed to know in kindergarten. We're thinking about maybe taking a refresher course in kindergarten, but Coaching, we're not so sure. And is Coaching really an industry?
We've all heard the saying, "Too many chiefs and not enough Indians", right? Well, we're going to coin a new saying. Ready? "Too many coaches and not enough players". Maybe that's why our economy is in the tank.
Recently we were at a wedding reception, and in talking with an old friend, she said, my Life Coach told me this, and my Life Coach told me that. I laughed so hard, I sprayed champagne all over the table centerpiece. Please help us understand. Please.
I help my clients raise their levels of self-knowledge and self-awareness, and become more intentional about choosing how they want to live. It's like turning a switch from mindless to mindful. Since I am particularly interested in helping parents and children learn to use technology mindfully, when I work with that population I begin by educating them about the attention economy and persuasive design.
I've worked with a couple of different coaches and not been happy with the lack of results. One approach seems to be cheerleading, rah-rah. Well, I am excited by results or at least progress. Tony Robins type jumping up and down and shouting just gets annoying especially without results. Another approach seems to be giving specific organizational instructions. How someone who has never done my business know how I should run my business? There is also the element of holding accountable. Like with a personal trainer, having a regular appointment with a person means you will work out and stick to your goals. That's nice but it assumes I'm not a self starter and must have someone to remind me to do stuff and fuss at me when I don't do stuff. It also assumes I have time to go to a coaching session rather than doing actual work. Maybe it's just me but I am not impressed with coaching. I also suspect the field has a surplus of "certified" coaches.
I specialize in solution focused coaching together with cbt and reality therapy/ choice theory. My specialty is helping others find solutions within themselves, be the challenge emotional or simply trying to grow their business. We generally have the answers to what we need to do to succeed within us and aren't seeing that reality due to some mental blockage that can be revealed through coaching. I love working with people and my main focus in life is helping others be successful. There is nothing more satisfying upon completing a session then having the client feel empowered to move forward in their lives. A Pollak
Coaching helps people keep their eye on the prize and stay on track with accomplishing important things that make their lives fulfilling, meaningful, vital, and worth living. It's easy to procrastinate, get side tracked, and become paralyzed through fear or analysis of doing it right. Coaching is accountability through understanding, support, guidance, questioning for clarity, and adjusting with agility. I love what I do.
None of us know how to handle everything from careers and business to relationships and emotions. Certainly friends can speak into those topics. The advantages of coaching are they have specific areas they help you focus on. They can be objective. They know how to ask great questions to make you think deeply which breaks through the confusion or pain.
AS a life, business and career coach the benefits are different. For example, I help people gain focus, obtain work-life balance, learn how to conquer/control procrastination, fears and anxiety. I helped those striving for career changes, advancements and improvements gain self-esteem, confidence and trust. Some individuals improve their demeanor, relationships and more.
