Does appearance influence your hiring practices or potential customer procurement decisions?

I  asked this question during the Global Hope Conference

Lets face it, perception is everything. Well..not exactly but it sure is important.

Consciously or not, part of any hiring or buying process will most certainly be influenced by appearance.

Appearance is only one part of the equation.

I find this question a bit vague.  If you are asking if the clients appearance should be taken into consideration in determining if you do business with someone then I would agree with Patti Rosenthal, the answer would be no.

If the question is about how you as a vendor present yourself then I would say definitely. First impressions make a lasting impression and appropriate appearance for your business is a way to support your brand.

First impressions are so important.  One must look the part to inspire confidence. impeccably dressed is not always the right look. A mechanic in overalls with grease on his hands looks the part.  A retail clerk dressed the same not so much

I don't feel someone has to look as thought they shop on Rodeo Drive, but being clean/well groomed and exhibiting a sense of confidence can go a long way. Show me you care about how you come across to others.  I would much rather see that as opposed to someone who is wearing designer clothes but has a cruddy attitude and lack of work ethic.

I have definitely learned not to judge - but we all internally react in some way (right or wrong) to first impressions.

If you simply shut down and don't allow that person to then present themselves as you would someone who came in looking the way you prefer, then you could be missing an opportunity.

Of course - this isn't called out much - but if you expect professional dress or a certain appearance at an event / meeting / function - it should be called out in the notice to individuals attending (if they chose to ignore or not read - then you can address that quickly and may be a very valid reason (attention to detail) to decide one way or another)

Also be aware of those on the rebound who are working very very hard to re enter the workforce and may have limited ability to have proper attire / appearance

Everyone that works at Pak Mail has to look presentable at least in terms of clothes worn and grooming. Employees wear a uniform shirt, but there is not an official dress code. We try to look clean and crisp for customers.

No, it does not. I've learned you can't judge a book by the cover.  I go by how I feel the conversation and connection is between us.  I can teach anyone anything, however only if  they "get" me.
