How do you handle comments about how expensive your service is?

We tow, and towing is very expensive. Our insurance, truck payments, and fuel alone for one month total over $11,000 and we only run two trucks full time and two part time. Customers always want us to do things for free or are shocked when a 100 mile tow costs $500.

These calls are likely the customers who are stuck in a jam, needing a quick fix, and need some sympathy for their situation. We'd say: 1) here are our prices; and with that we're gonna take care of you with 'end-to-end premium full-service' (get you home safely and check on you through the process safely); and 2) (when they experience sticker shock), "sure folks, no problem, all our services and all prices are clearly listed on our website, we are not the cheapest service around and there are lots of other choices out there, so feel free to shop around and we'll be here if you need us". And, 3) go back and look at your marketing and advertising plan; are you investing in "image" and "branding" promotions, selling your company (externally and internally) as the best at what you do, and what are you doing to generate steady ongoing business from non-emergency sources?
up front Pricing and great service I may be a little bit more expensive but customers like seeing uniformed, Trained drivers and good clean Equipment and will usually pay extra to know their car is in safe hands
customers don't understand over head costs
Fire Towing is the best around. Tell them I sent you and they will take good care of you.
Owning and maintaining a tow vehicle is expensive,it can be costly to tow a vehicle based on where the breakdown occurred and size of the vehicle, many insurance companies do reimburse for towing, check your policy!
I don't know much about the towing business. So all I can say is let them know up front all the cost and fees.
I AM IN THE AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR BUISNESS SO I CAN TOTALLY RELATE WHENEVER I AM TALKING ABOUT PRICING I ALWAYS POINT OUT VALUE FOR INSTANCE IN YOUR CASE YES THE PRICE IS MORE THEN WHAT YOU MAY HAVE EXPECTED BUT IM SO GLAD YOU CHOSE TO TRUST US WITH YOUR VEHICLE WE ARE FAMILY OWNED COMPANY AND TRULY BELIEVE IN TREATING OUR CUSTOMERS WITH RESPECT AND WE GO OUT OF OUR WAY TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE PRIORITY WITH THE COST OF GAS THESE DAY WE ARE ALL STRUGGLING SO THANK YOU FOR TRUSTING US.
When people ask me to do things for nothing or why it cost a certain price. Explain what they are paying for and give the best service you can normally always wins over price. And sometimes i ask them if their boss wanted them too work for a cheaper rate would they? Answer is always no, so explain to them that's kind of what your asking me to do. In a nice way of coarse.

I believe that honesty is the best policy. I practice that with everything I do. Alot of times one needs to educate the customer on why. Most of the time they don't know and some don't care. Let's take a look at what's free at HEB for example: customer service, bathrooms, stocked shelves, clean floors, and a place to come and purchase what ever you like, but you have to purchase it is what I'm getting at. Most of your clients have a job and don't go into work for free and neither do you. Use your market, know your competition and stay aggressive. Be honest, courteous, love your customer & what you do. Expect to get paid for your efforts and time but stay humble.
