How Can We Target Members of a Particular Affinity Group?

How can you find people in a particular affinity group?

In our case, we are trying to make our congregation known to Jews in our area who are unaffiliated with any other synagogue. (We do not seek converts, although anyone who is interested in exploring Judaism is always welcome.) How can we target our message to that specific audience? Our resources are slim and we have just 8 hours of paid administrative work per week in our office.

Find out where they gather and then go there. You have to be intentional to enter their world first, get to know them and begin to build relationships with them. This is, in my opinion and experience, the greatest draw. People draw other people. I would also suggest looking for ways to leverage the space you are currently using. One of the things we have begun doing is identifying the needs of our target audience and then using our large space to organize events that allow us to meet those needs. For example, we recently did a mental health awareness training that providing information on identifying the signs and symptoms of various mental illnesses and existing resources that would allow those whose loved ones have been, or they themselves are affected to receive support and assistance.

Have you looked at buying a list? There are many list brokers and I would recommend calling them to see which ones could separate out the demographics you seek.

Hope that helps.

Greetings and Blessings,

Being a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin I am sure that getting to know other groups other than your own in Waukesha can be difficult. But it i s not impossible. I think the first approach is to use the congregation as your first source. I am sure they know where the uncommitted are and many may be friends of theirs. Another way would be to have an open house around a topic that effects all those of Jewish decent, perhaps a discussion around things happening in Israel and allow that to be your introduction to them.

In these times, it's not so much about message as it is about the meaning and the relationship behind it. the scriptures state that in order to gain friends you must first show yourself friendly.

Ann that is a great question! I will simply give you a snapchat of what I think might work.

1) A praying team above all things.

2) You need to make an effort to become visible in the community:

a) Local Access TV (it is usually free).

b) Setting aside some money for a radio show that is engaging.

c) Direct mailing to that particular population.

3) To create Health Activities in and for the community and invite some Jewish Health Professionals to volunteer at those activities.

I hope this helps. You are on the right track. And if you need a more direct consulting work, you could hire me to come to your congregation and share a more direct approach and make an in-depth assessment of your needs and potential ways to achieve your goals. Be blessed!

I would look at competitors in other areas of the country and see how they approach this. I would also look for Jewish events held in your area to go meet people, to speak at and to have booths telling others about you. On Social Media, I would friend the type of people/ organizations/ groups you are wanting to approach. Hold special Jewish events (a Passover Seder) at your synagogue and advertise it being open to the public. There is a synagogue down the street from me that I would love to visit, but not sure when would be good time. This would allow others who want to know more to come explore.

Shalom!

Using MeetupWilmington or whatever area you are in?

Thank you for some great suggestions! I am also hoping to advise realtors of our location so they can have the information on hand for clients who would be interested. People who move to the area are least likely to know we are here, although there is a relatively small number of people in the Milwaukee area who don't know we exist. Since there is a limited number of synagogues here (the Jewish population in Wisconsin is a very small part of the general population), it's people who are relocating who would be least likely to be aware of our location.

Again, thank you for the thought-provoking ideas! I'll watch to see if I can help with ideas here too.

I would recommend considering the events/environments that cater to the Jewish community. Another way may be to leverage the post office (USPS) and do a postcard/letter direct mail campaign using set criteria in your community. UPS also offers similar services. This way you can get an idea of the "opportunity" in the community and target them specifically using criterion established.

Sow the seeds and trust God to send the people who He would have join your church.

You might try some targeted online advertising. Facebook can be great for this
