How do you get onto a radio program or TV to give health advice?

One part of being a doctor is the desire to education the general public.  The easiest way to through radio or TV.  I have sent press releases to our locals as well as to local newspapers.  These press releases have not been ads, but most educational articles written for lay people about a certain topic such as the dangers of fireworks especially for your eyes.

You can start your own radio show on Blog Talk Radio and set the agenda/discussion of your show.  Here's the website https://www.blogtalkradio.com/.  You can also go on line to visit several radio and TV stations and leave your contact information and the content you desire to share.  This is a great start.  Good luck.

Create a regular 3 to 5 min. capsule and find a sponsor to tag onto it, believe me most radio stations will find a way to put you on their program schedule.

I applaud all professionals who use their experience to create credible content for

our listeners. We at MIKE FM find the client to sponsor segments we create with doctors, lawyers, teachers, therapists, interior decorators, financial advisers etc...

Blessings to all,

Marie

Hello Susan,
We can create an 'info-mercial' or a series of 'Eye Tips' within a 60-second commercial.  With our company, we could create this with our Spanish radio properties, as well as english radio stations.   I'd be happy to discuss the possibilities.   We can create the commercial  or series of commercials at no-charge.    Thanks again for reaching out to me.

You find a talk show radio station that has slots for local businesses

I would maybe try your hand at podcasting first. Easy to produce, no time restrictions. Pretty much control the design and flow of the show. Very little money to get started. Get listed on iTunes, Spotify, I heart radio etc.

I would call any local radio station or email them if you think the content fits.  The key is to start at a smaller level and then you can work into bigger outlets.  As far as television, it will be a little more difficult.  See if there are any local government channels through your local cable.  Sometimes the local government and law enforcement will have an outlet they use.  Easiest route would be internet! There is a world of opportunity waiting there.  Research the topic and maybe some online places for audio or video production, where your content would fit.

Do your homework.  Find and contact all the relative programs you would like to have invite you and send them a short introduction and statement of what you have to offer and why you are one who they should consider.  References and recommendations are also helpful.  A picture and short bio should also be included.  Delivering in person, when possible, is always better than mail or email.  It's harder to say "No" to someone face-to-face than it is in a letter.  Remember, these people will decide in the first 30 seconds whether or not they will consider you so make a good impression immediately.

Also, make contact with as man people as you can in your area(s) of interest.  Andbe sure to stay in touch with them, develop a relationship.  A lot of times "it's not what you know but WHO you know."  A good contact can be worth a thousand proposals.

As with most things...it depends!  Most radio and TV stations are driven by revenue.  In some cases you can buy time to do your own show, or, as part of a negotiation to spend money on advertising, you can include an on-air interview segment as part of the deal.  You can also either pre-sell a sponsor for your time which then passes through to the station, or if they allow it, pre-sell one or more sponsors for your segment, you keep the cash and simply pay the station for the time.  In rare cases, a station may want a health segment which they believe will appeal to listeners to draw an audience.  You may have to allow them to sell sponsorships and you may or not be able to negotiate whether certain types of businesses can "underwrite" your segment. It might help if you are associated with an existing advertiser or have demonstrated expertise, written and published papers or books, have an advanced degree, live locally or are locally known.  A personal relationship with someone at the station in question might also be an advantage and if they are amenable, ask them to introduce you and vouch for your ability. In any case, approach a Sales Manager or Program Director of a station and ask how they would prefer it happen, if at all.  You have nothing to lose.

Hi Susan!

One option is to construct a radio marketing campaign comprised of :60 Second "Health Tips". You could sponsor them or you could record them yourself and position yourself and your medical practice as a Health Expert!

One possibility, which is done all the time, is to go to a A M Radio station in your area and purchase a 15 min. or 1/2 hour block of time each week and produce your own live call in show. You would be creating a type of infomercial where you can talk about various health topics while, at the same time, talking directly and indirectly about your business with interested people who call in live. It’s a great way to promote a health oriented business.
