If you do not have a referral type program and even if you do make a game out of it for your clients. In other words offer them something for referring someone. If you are retail you may have a spin wheel with a prize when they refer someone or where they draw a prize if they refer someone. something simple like that I think works well.
There are a lot of good ideas here for the people answering your question. Referrals are important. But don't rely on only referrals only. Referrals come when you take care of your customers, yes. To many times I see businesses trying to live off referrals only. They flat line at a certain place and don't grow. It would scare me to think you are going to try to build your business on referrals only. maybe that fits your business model and I have seen that. But more often its not best. Testimonies should be on your website's front page. Then you need to look at the big picture in advertising your business. Hope that helps

I let them know that the a referral is the best compliment I can receive!
I also have fundraisers for referrals that result in monies being given to local charities once a family moves in to our community. We do this once a year. We raised almost 3,000 dollars last year.
We also honor our current clients (residents) with credit towards their lease rate when they refer a family to us that moves in to our community.
There are a number of things you could do, but one of the simplest is to do an email campaign and offer an incentive for referrals. You'll need to give some thought to the management of the referral program, with expiration dates and a discount offering for the referrer. It can be a discount on their next order after a referral makes a qualifying purchase, for example.
Or you could offer a "lunch and learn" event where your customers can come and are encouraged to bring a business associate. Or throw a customer appreciation party.

Here is a thought - it's creative and FUN - Send a giant Cookie to all of your customers and say thank you for your business - and if you know anyone that would be interested in my services - "that would be sweet".
Have a fun little gift for referring your company. It doesn't have to be expensive, a movie ticket, a coupon for lunch, or a Starbucks Coffee. If your customers love what you've done for them they will refer you anyway BUT if you offer them a little thank you from you, that shows your customer that you appreciate them too.

I'm not one for beeting around the bush. I would be truthful to your clients. Explain How your company is expanding. I they were happy and are still happy with the products you brought them, then maybe they know someone elsenwhoncoukd benefit from these same products they did. You would be happy tonight them the same level of service that they received.
You could also offer a referral fee for qualified referrals. That way the current client feels like they got something out of this as well.
Thus is not really fun of very creative but If they believe it is right.
I try to build a friendship with my customers from the start, asking if they need help with anything or just a hello. You would be surprised at how much they like being treated like a friend instead of just a customer. If you happen to know a birthday, special event and all holidays send them a email. It will make them more receptive when you ask for them to help you out.Everyone loves to help,so use something like:I know your busy, but could you do me a big favor?I would like to know if you know someone that can benefit from what I'm doing.I sure would be glad if you could help me out.And if you need something let me know and I'll help if I can.Always be genuine, let your voice do the work, people can feel when you are smiling.Should you not have a phone number send an Email and just act they are part of the your family, because in a way they are.I hope this helps.pm me and I'll show you where I learned all this.
Referrals are always a sticky subject and can prove to be difficult to ask for. I have found it very useful to ask customers who have been happy with my work to allow me to use them as a "case study." I create a 1-2 page document that outlined the problem a customer had and how my group solved it. This has proven to be a very powerful tool and works great as a reference as well (because customers feel important). Also, obtaining quotes or testimonials for your website is an equally strong tool.
What happens when you obtain multiple "case studies" and testimonials is that these customers start referring folks on their own without being asked. You have simply reminded them why they liked doing business with you and the value you brought to them.
