What do you think of someone who attempts to get more customers at a funeral?
💡 What would your reaction be if someone approaches you at a funeral to join their MLM (multi-level marketing) program?
Do you think this is appropriate? Why? And, why not?

First let's clarify ... Your initial headline infers it's the funeral home or cemetery who are approaching prospective customers. The second sentence clarifies that it's someone in a Multi-level Marketing chain, looking to make connections.
I can tell you from our perspective and knowing the professionals we associate with in our profession, that funeral professionals would never interfere with family time, whether visiting hours, funeral service or committal at the cemetery.Â
If someone else is making advances, it probably should be brought to the funeral directors' or cemetery staff's attention so that we/they could quietly discourage such actions. We are always in the background, available if needed. Don't hesitate to ask us for anything you/the family may need or want to feel comfortable and valued.Â
If someone approached me about their business at a family funeral, they would not get my business. A death is a time to be with family and friends to grieve with and support each other.
"Attempts to get more customers at a funeral" is tremendously vague. So, I will put forward this; my services sell themselves. If I am doing my job properly, i.e. attending to the family, focusing on the details and preparing an environment where people can grieve openly and comfortably, then my services will be called on again in the future. No "solicitation" required. Funeral services are a living example of the phrase, "they won't remember what you said or did, but will remember how you made them feel".
In my experience, very few people who've had a positive experience with a funeral firm can actually recall details about the funerals for their loved ones. Its because the details were taken care of, and that's what we strive for. It's usually negative details that people can recall, because they had to bear the weight of that during a time of duress.Â
People remember whether or not their pain was eased; that their expectations were met. It's a gut feeling. And that is what brings people back. Overtly approaching attendees with requests for appointments or arrangements would be classless and predatory - and that would be remembered too, only for all the wrong reasons.Â
I think it would be extremely tacky for anyone to solicit at a funeral. So no, I do not think it's appropriate at all, and the 'why' is pretty obvious. Besides the tackyness of doing so, would they really expect to be taken seriously?Â
Oh and just the fact that it is MLM makes it even worse ! Don't do itÂ
No question in my mind. This is absolutely not the time or place for business of any kind.Â
It is definitely not appropriate. We have high standards and would never solicit business at a funeral
I'd give them the evil eye roll, suck my teeth and walk away. I read something the other day about a new funeral scam going on. People are calling the bereaved saying the deceased owed them money. Bad enough someone has to stay home during the funeral so the family doesn't get robbed while saying final goodbye to a loved one. People are getting more and more tacky by the day.
Definitely not the place for personal gain. Business is business, but funerals are for family n friends not a place to do business. "Don't do it"
That is NOT the time or place.
