There are many different ways to get the word out about your product.  The best thing to look at first is where are your customers?  What is your Demographic?  With out those factors known, you can not put together a cost effective marketing plan.  If your customers on not just local then an internet campaign may be what you need.  Internet Radio is one of the most cost effective forms of advertising available.  Many stations will bonus you spots just to fill up their commercial breaks at no charge.  Facebook campaigns are a good idea but now we are finding that Facebook is fudging the numbers as to the reach you get.

You need to plot out where your customer is and how they can be reached even before you think of cost.

Word of mouth, free speaking engagements

Honestly, I think the best way to market, for example, myself as a fitness coach, is through client referrals,  the problem is, it's so difficult to get them to give you one!? If you have a product I think Instagram can be a great way to reach thousands of people through an ad campaign. It seems to be the best platform for new products and exposure.  Any suggestions in my field out there, do incentives or any other methods work for a referral?

I find that people who get success getting free from anxiety and panic are my best marketing.  Also I have a number of doctors that refer their patients to me, and I offer their patients free consultation so it's a win for all.
Since I typically only do 3 free consultations a month, the referrals from my clients or from doctors get a consultation without having to wait until a slot opens up the next month.

With the VoxxLife Product we have a few ways to market ,The home show, they can order on our site and Trade Fares when reasonable !!  A lot of my customers come right to my home and purchase from word of mouth from  happy customers.I also have customers in the U.S and across Canada and a few in England.

Service and experience. The only thing clients respond to is the experience and return for the experience. So much is available now and less expensive so what keeps them referring and coming back is the experience

Hi Adena, it sounds like you are specifically interested in marketing a hardgoods product. At Humanscope we have had some great success with crowdfunding. We have done six crowdfunding campaigns. Our most successful was on Kickstarter for our Aumi Smart Nightlight where we raised over 160K in 45 days. We have learned alot about what works to have a successful campaign. Alot of upfront social media marketing is required to build a following prior to your launch. You will know within 24 hours if your campaign will be successful. Below is a link that discusses some tips prior to launch.  https://www.kickstarter.com/blog/guest-post-games-creator-james-hudson-on-marketing-your-campaign  There are many other posts on Indiegogo and Kickstarter on how to have a successful campaign. Crowdfunding is a great, low risk way do market research and raise funds for product development and additional marketing.

My top two ways to market my services are free. Reach out to people on your heart by telephone, so they can hear your voice. Develop authentic relationships via social media, genuinely care about people, and when the time is right, share from your heart how your services can benefit and enrich people's lives.
